For.U.M., the Confederation of Maltese Trade Unions, expresses its grave concern and unequivocal condemnation of the recent actions by the government, which has chosen to publicly attack the negotiations of the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) in the context of the ongoing discussions on the MCAST collective agreement. This action represents a blatant attempt to undermine good faith negotiations and is a clear tactic of unfair arm-twisting aimed at weakening the union’s legitimate efforts to secure a fair agreement for its members.
MUT, as a member of For.U.M., has been working diligently and constructively in the negotiation process, advocating for better conditions for MCAST grades. Industrial action currently being undertaken by MUT is a legally sanctioned and constitutionally protected measure, reflective of the Union’s frustration with the government’s unwillingness to address key concerns. The government’s decision to selectively mentioning proposals in a confused way and out of context is not only irresponsible but also undermines the principle of mutual respect that must underpin any collective bargaining process.
Such actions by the government are highly concerning for several reasons:
1. Erosion of Trust in the Negotiation Process: Collective bargaining relies on trust and confidentiality to facilitate meaningful dialogue and compromise. The government has severely compromised this trust, making it harder to reach a balanced and amicable agreement.
2. Public Manipulation: The selective release of information and misinformation risks misrepresenting the MUT’s proposals and intentions, turning public opinion against educators and diverting attention from the government’s reluctance to address legitimate issues.
3. Disregard for Workers’ Rights: Such tactics show a lack of respect for the collective rights of educators, grades affected by the agreement and all trade union members, setting a dangerous precedent for industrial relations in Malta.
For.U.M. calls on the government to immediately cease these divisive practices and return to the negotiation table in a spirit of genuine collaboration. We remind the government that collective bargaining is a cornerstone of democracy and social justice, protected by both local and international labor standards. Attempts to undermine a Union through public disclosure and manipulation harm not only the workers directly involved but also Malta’s reputation as a nation that upholds fundamental rights and respects its commitments under international labor conventions.
We also urge the public to consider the broader context of this situation. The employees represented by MUT are key contributors to the development of Malta’s future generations. They deserve respect, recognition, and fair working conditions—not public vilification or attempts to delegitimize their demands.
For.U.M. reaffirms its unwavering support for MUT and its members during this critical time. We stand united in the fight for fairness, dignity, and justice for all workers. The government must recommit to respectful dialogue and abandon tactics that erode trust and threaten the integrity of industrial relations in Malta.
